Development at ACEMS

The Centre is committed to developing the capabilities of all members, including in their research, outreach, engagement and communications. Moreover, this commitment to development extends beyond members, benefiting those in the mathematical sciences community more generally.

Throughout 2019 ACEMS continued the training and development of its members; brought mathematics and statistics into schools through its MathsCraft program, the CSIRO STEM Professionals in Schools program, and via new STEM games such as ‘Virtual Reef Diver – the game’ and ‘Sats and Stats – Earth Edition board game’; offered research training opportunities for the wider community, both in and out of the university sector, through open workshops and public lectures; and delivered a successful mentoring program, including mentoring match-ups and seminars.

A highlight for ACEMS communications in 2019 was the number of Centre members who took part in media training. ACEMS worked with three other ARC Centres of Excellence to co-host three communication and media training workshops. In total, 20 ACEMS researchers attended those three workshops which covered topics like talking to the media, pitch training, body language, and story-telling.
